Citation Annotation (Auto-Cite)
Match text with references, review candidates and unmatched passages, and export content with citations
Open the tool
In research mode, open “Research Toolbox → Citation Annotation,” or use the standalone Citation Annotation page. To organize an existing reference list, choose “Reference Completion.” To extract a reference list from a PDF, use “Reference Extraction.”
Two annotation methods
Automatic annotation
Paste your text and select “Automatic Annotation.” Set the target citation count, year range, field, journals, and other conditions as needed, then start processing. The system identifies passages that need citations and searches for candidate papers.
Manual markers
Insert [CITE] where a citation is needed, or use [CITE:search hint] to narrow the search topic. For example:
Graph neural networks can model relational information in molecular structures [CITE:graph neural network molecular property prediction].Select “Manual Markers” and run the tool to find candidates for each marker. Check the notice before submission and your usage details for the actual credit cost.
Review and revise the results
Check each paper's title, authors, year, source link, and matched content. If a candidate is unsuitable, use the replace, delete, or search actions on the results page. For unmatched passages, add evidence or revise the original text; do not treat them as already supported by the literature.
Choose a citation style in the interface, such as IEEE, APA, or Harvard. Exports follow your current selection and the formats actually offered.
Saving papers to a project does not automatically limit Citation Annotation to those papers or guarantee lower charges. Annotation currently searches according to the input text and filters. To restrict the evidence strictly, bring the selected literature into a research conversation, explicitly ask for analysis based only on those materials, and then verify the citations manually.
Save and export
Use the page's Markdown, HTML, BibTeX, RIS, and other export actions for the annotated text and reference list. You can also select a project and save the result as a document. Projects save and organize results; they are not required before annotation begins.
If input validation or a request fails, check the error and history first. If credits are insufficient, add credits and retry. Avoid submitting a request again while it is still pending.
Reference Completion
In “Reference Completion,” paste existing references with one entry per line. The system tries to match publication records, fill in information such as authors and DOIs, and standardize formatting. Unmatched entries need manual review.
Export the completed references or save a separate copy to the selected project. A publication match identifies a candidate record; it does not establish that the paper supports the claim in your text.
